This page explains what information State of Prayers collects, why, and what we do with it. We try to write this in plain language, because legal jargon hides the things that actually matter.
Who runs this site
State of Prayers is an independent project operated from Louisiana, United States. For privacy questions, contact info@stateofprayers.com.
What we collect
We collect only what we need to run the site.
When you post a prayer
- The text of your prayer itself.
- Your name, if you provide one (you can also post anonymously).
- Your location (US state, or country if outside the US), if you provide it.
- The category you select.
- Your email address, if you provide one. This is used only to send you a manage link and the notifications you sign up for.
- Your IP address, briefly, to prevent spam and abuse. Not used for tracking; not stored long-term.
- A random browser token stored in your browser, so you can manage your prayer from the same device without an account.
When you read or pray for others
- Your browser token, so we can track which prayers you've prayed for (visible only to you).
- An email address, only if you opt in to receive a follow-up notification when an asker shares an update.
What we don't collect
- We don't have user accounts, so we have no usernames, passwords, or profiles.
- We don't track you across the web. No third-party advertising trackers.
- We don't collect your real name unless you put it in a prayer or in a notification email.
- We don't sell, rent, or share your data with anyone for marketing or advertising.
Why we collect what we do
- Prayers are displayed publicly on the wall. This is the whole purpose of the site.
- Email addresses are used only to send you transactional emails: a confirmation, a manage link, follow-up notifications you signed up for, and a notice if your notification window expires. Never marketing.
- IP addresses and browser tokens are used to prevent abuse and to allow you to manage your own activity.
Who we share information with
We use a small number of services to run the site. Each one only sees the data needed to do its job:
- Vercel — hosts the website.
- Cloudflare — handles DNS and protects against bots and abuse.
- Supabase — stores the database (prayers, emails, etc.).
- Resend — sends our emails.
- OpenAI — runs an automated content moderation check on submissions. We send the text of the submission only; no personal information.
- Ko-fi — handles donations. We don't see your payment information; Ko-fi does.
We do not share information with anyone for marketing, advertising, or data-sale purposes. If we are ever required to disclose information by valid legal process (a subpoena, court order, etc.), we will, but we will resist overbroad requests.
How long we keep your data
- Prayers stay on the wall indefinitely, as part of the public record. You can delete your own prayer at any time using your manage link or, if you posted from the same browser, the in-browser delete option.
- Email addresses are kept as long as you have an active prayer or notification subscription. When you delete a prayer or unsubscribe, your email is removed within 30 days.
- IP address logs are kept for a short period (typically 30 days) for abuse prevention, then discarded.
- Browser tokens persist on your own device until you clear your browser data.
Your rights
You can:
- Delete your prayer at any time, via the manage link (email-based) or from the same browser you posted from.
- Unsubscribe from notifications through any email we send you.
- Request a copy of your data by writing to info@stateofprayers.com.
- Request deletion of all your data by writing to info@stateofprayers.com. We will comply within 30 days.
If you are in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or California, you have additional rights under GDPR / UK GDPR / CCPA. We honor those rights for everyone — there is no separate process by region.
Children's privacy
State of Prayers is intended for users aged 16 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from users under 16. If we learn that someone under 16 has posted a prayer, we will remove it and delete any associated information. If you believe a child has posted on the site, please contact us at info@stateofprayers.com.
Cookies and browser storage
We use a small amount of browser storage to remember your browser token (so you can manage your own activity) and your theme preference (light or dark). We do not use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.
Changes to this policy
If we change anything material about how we handle data, we will update this page and note the date at the top. For significant changes, we will surface a notice on the site.
